Topps Lost Rookies: ten soccer cards and their parallels
Young Messi, Cristiano in Manchester, Ronaldo at Inter. Ten base cards to start with, four parallels to compare, and the details that separate a modern retrospective from a rookie-year card.

01 / THE IDEA
Rookie imagery, modern release dates
Topps Lost Rookies imagines cards that could have accompanied a player’s early European career. The dated season, vintage-style design and RC shield are part of that retrospective idea. Messi’s card was released in 2020, not 2004; Henry’s was released in 2025, not 1997. Treat them as modern commemorative collectibles with their own appeal.
This soccer-only top 10 is an editorial starting collection. We prioritize the image, the early-career chapter and how the cards work together, then require an identifiable edition and inspectable artwork. Prices and affiliate commissions do not determine the order. This is neither a complete checklist nor an investment ranking, and its positions are separate from the ICX Moment Score.
The series spans several release waves and many more players than these ten. Our selection includes the initial 2020/21 wave, the 2022 return and later 2024/25 releases. Topps’ archive also records Agüero at 364 base copies and Beckenbauer at 2,141. Their lower supply alone does not displace the images chosen here.
02 / SUPPLY
What the base print runs tell us
Four selected base runs are confirmed by the official archive: Ronaldo 6,738, Zlatan 3,600, Kaká 3,066 and Xavi 2,202. Iniesta’s 2,463 is a useful outside comparison. These counts describe base production. They do not count autographs, prove current buyer demand or turn an unnumbered base into a serial-numbered parallel.
The six remaining selected base runs stay unverified in this review. Numbers repeated by marketplaces or checklist sites are research leads until a publisher-controlled source can substantiate them. Missing means unknown, not zero and not scarce. The release prices in the table are archived regional single-card prices, before any unverified delivery charges; they are not current resale estimates.

03 / THE SELECTION
Ten base cards to keep.
An editorial order. Every image in this section shows the unsigned base edition. Each market panel separates completed sales from asking prices; older listing snapshots are labeled.

2020 / Lionel Messi
The starting point
Messi leads because the young Barcelona image gives this retrospective idea its clearest purpose. The white border, purple name panel and 2004/05 season on the reverse make an inviting companion to a Messi career collection. The card was released in November 2020; the RC shield does not move its manufacture back to 2004.
Base first. Purple /25 echoes the name panel, but any premium needs its own completed sales. The archived /49 wording remains an unresolved early-series detail.

2020 / Cristiano Ronaldo
The natural companion
Cristiano in Manchester United red belongs beside Messi. The wide photograph and restrained nameplate let the early-career image do the work. This is a December 2020 release representing 2003/04, with CR0304R printed on the back. That code is more useful than a seller calling it simply “Ronaldo rookie”.
The base is the reference edition. Verify the serial on every colored copy and keep Cristiano separate from Ronaldo Nazário in searches.

2022 / Ronaldo
The strongest club-color design
Ronaldo in Inter’s blue and black is my strongest design choice. The stepped border repeats the shirt, making the ordinary base feel complete. Topps calls the product Card #1, while the front also contains a 9 as a design element. Those are different identifiers. The official archive records 6,738 base copies.
Black /99 is the parallel I would examine beside the base: a coherent color match with a clear serial limit. It is not automatically worth more per copy than another player’s rarer edition.

2024 / Zinedine Zidane
Juventus before the Madrid years
Zidane’s 2024 release points back to the 1996/97 season printed on the front. The Juventus stripes and large club crest create a different chapter from the familiar Real Madrid image. That is the appeal of Lost Rookies at its best: choosing which version of an established legend you want to remember.
The base is the clean starting point. Blue /49 provides a documented comparison; its 49-copy ceiling is known even though the base run remains unverified in this review.

2024 / Ronaldinho
A Barcelona pair worth displaying
Ronaldinho’s 2024 card and Messi’s 2020 card share the purple-bar visual language and look especially good together. The pairing is the collecting reason here, rather than an assumed return. Both evoke Barcelona in 2004/05, but they were issued four years apart and need separate release identities.
Keep the unsigned base, numbered unsigned parallels and separately sold autographs in three separate comparisons. The current base print run is an evidence gap here.

2021 / Paolo Maldini
Give the defender a place
A ten-card display made entirely of attacking players would miss part of the game. Maldini gives this selection an AC Milan defensive anchor and an early-wave design. Use 2021 as the release year: Topps’ archive dates the product to April 2021, even when marketplaces group the wider collection under 2020 or 2020/21.
I would retain the base design before pursuing the red /10.

2025 / Thierry Henry
The Monaco chapter
Henry is the useful surprise: Monaco rather than Arsenal. The action photograph gives the player room to move and the reverse explicitly names 1997/98. The product was released on 17 January 2025, despite the SKU containing 24LRC. Record the published release year, not an inferred year from that stock code.
The base delivers the full Monaco image. The six listed parallel limits add finite supply, but no verified recent sale sample establishes their premiums.

2024 / Zlatan Ibrahimović
Ajax, before the travelling legend
Zlatan’s Ajax card earns its place through the early-career setting and the strong red-and-white composition. The 2024 release has 3,600 base copies in Topps’ archive. That is fewer than Ronaldo’s 6,738, but the count alone cannot tell us which card has more buyers today.
The separately sold autograph /25 has its own official product page. A signature and its launch price must never enter the ordinary base-card valuation.

2022 / Xavi
The midfield counterpart
Xavi adds a midfield chapter to the Barcelona group. The official archive records 2,202 base copies, the smallest verified base run among these ten selections. That count describes supply; it does not establish a bargain. Topps calls the product Card #8, while the front design contains a 6 and the inspected back has no card number.
I would keep the base alongside Messi and Ronaldinho. Iniesta remains a close alternative: his 2,463-copy base is documented, but the numbered /99 is the exact image we could verify for the parallel comparison below.

2022 / Kaká
A second Milan chapter
Kaká closes the ten with an early Milan image and 3,066 base copies in the official archive. His back carries K0304R and the 2003/04 season; the product was sold in November 2022 as Card #7. The release number, printed back code and depicted season each serve a different purpose.
Black /10 offers a striking Milan color match. Compare it with Ronaldo’s black /99 to see why a shared color is not a shared rarity tier.

04 / SERIAL FIRST
Read the serial before the color
The inspected first-wave Messi, Cristiano and Maldini galleries show /25, /10, /5 and 1/1 unsigned parallels. Their archived product descriptions also mention /49, but the inspected galleries do not resolve that unsigned edition. We retain the discrepancy instead of declaring either that it exists in hand or that it does not. Later selected product pages list /99, /49, /25, /10, /5 and 1/1.
Colors are player-specific. The inspected Ronaldo artwork shows black /99, pink /49, green /25, purple /10, blue /5 and gold 1/1. Kaká shows green /99, blue /49, purple /25, black /10, red /5 and gold 1/1. These are visual descriptions of publisher previews, not a universal named color system. A black card can therefore mean 99 copies or ten.
For collecting, /99 and /49 offer a way to seek a finite edition while retaining the same photograph. /25, /10, /5 and 1/1 reduce the serial ceiling further; they can also leave fewer comparable sales and a much longer search. No tier earns an automatic price multiplier. Without verified insertion probabilities and allocation rules, adding the parallel limits and dividing by the base print run does not establish a pack or order hit rate.

Publisher previews: the sample 01 serial is illustrative. Each record identifies an edition, not a specific physical copy offered for sale. Color descriptions follow the inspected artwork.
05 / PRICE & EVIDENCE
Autographs and resale prices need separate evidence
Topps explicitly separates autograph products from the unsigned base-order chase. Zlatan’s official autograph /25 page displays an archived £250 price, while his base page displays £8.99. These are different products and historical offer prices. Neither number establishes what a collector can recover today; an aftermarket signature is another identity again.
The market review did not produce a qualifying current completed-sale sample for these exact editions. Some results were inaccessible, some mixed graded or autograph cards, and a Ronaldinho /99 result concealed the accepted Best Offer. Those observations cannot support medians, parallel premiums or a “best investment” label. A missing sample is a coverage limit, not proof that the card does not sell.
How I would build a small display
I would begin with Messi and Cristiano for the rivalry, then add Ronaldo for the Inter design. A Barcelona display can pair Messi, Ronaldinho and Xavi. Milan offers a different pairing in Maldini and Kaká. Choose the story and image you want to keep, then choose an edition and a budget you are comfortable with.
Before comparing listings, check actual release year, player, photograph, reverse, signature status, serial and condition. Separate item price, shipping and currency. For a parallel, require a readable photograph of the serial. Linked searches help locate supply; they do not guarantee stock or an exact match.
We may earn a commission through eBay links. Searches show supply, not completed sales; commissions do not influence this selection.
